Mexico’s truck drivers go on strike

Truck drivers in Mexico say they will stage a massive strike to demand lower operating costs and improved road safety.
The massive strike, which is set to begin on Tuesday, will likely involve blocking highways and disrupting cargo movements.
The Mexican Federation of Transporters’ Organisations said that they represent bus passenger fleets and cargo, and that the strike and protests will not be violent.

Problems caused by the Mexican government’s indifference

They also said that the traffic jams and other inconveniences on
the highways are caused by the indifference of the Mexican government,
and that we want the government to pay attention to this issue and take action.
They also expressed outrage that they are receiving death and robbery threats from
other drivers while travelling and that the National Guard does nothing about it.

Mexico Frequent cargo theft and excessive tolls

According to the Mexican Ministry of Security and Civil Protection, cargo thefts are prevalent in Michoacán,
a Mexican state, and have increased by 10% year-on-year, with 5,470 thefts this year.
Another demand of the Mexican Federation of Transporters’ Organisations is to
reduce excessive tolls and eliminate extortion due to corruption by local police.
